Is Recessed Lighting Out of Style?

Recessed lighting: yay or nay? See if it’s right for your new home.

Building a new house involves so many elements, and one of the most important is lighting. You will need an electrician to perform any electrical work in your home, but if you build new, professional electrical work will come with the construction. Recessed lighting often comes with a new home, but is it the right lighting choice? Specifically, is recessed lighting out of style?

What Is Recessed Lighting?

Recessed lighting is a type of can lighting, built-in lights inserted into ceilings and sometimes walls and floors. Recessed lighting is canless, meaning its bulb is covered by a smooth plate and the light fixture is as flush with the surface as possible.

Pros of Recessed Lighting

Space Saving

Recessed lights get rid of the need for floor lamps and table lamps, which can save ample floor space while providing the ambient, even lighting a given room or hallway needs. If you want overhead lighting, recessed lights offer effective lighting with minimal impact.

Ambient Lighting

Despite some allegations, recessed lights provide even, ambient lighting. Overhead lighting can consist of one larger overhead light, but this light might not spread out as much as it would with multiple recessed lights.

Great for Low Ceilings

Family rooms, kitchens, hallways, and basements can be long and broad with lower ceilings than a great room. Even with 9-foot ceilings, recessed lights are very beneficial in evenly illuminating spaces like these.

Task Lighting

These canless lights aren’t just great for general lighting; they can also be great task lights. In kitchens, for example, one switch could turn on a series of general overhead lights, and another switch could turn on task lights over countertops.

Cons of Recessed Lighting

Expenses & Maintenance

This kind of lighting could be pricey to install and difficult to maintain if placed in high ceilings. In new construction, you can talk with your home builder about the lighting design and pricing.

Lack of Artistry

Some people believe recessed lights might be going out of style because of their lack of artistry. They can appear cold and uncanny. However, with a warm lighting temperature and the right placement, they can still prove a great choice.
