The Kitchen Triangle

The kitchen triangle is a tried and true design principle for creating a functional kitchen in the home. It is the placement of three components, the fridge, the sink, and the stove, in a triangle formation for the most efficient workflow. If the kitchen is a single line against one wall, then they will simply line up against the wall.

Usually, the refrigerator will be on the outskirts of the kitchen so that the household can easily grab a drink or snack without disrupting anyone working in the kitchen. 

In general, these three elements will form a triangle within a galley, L-shaped, or U-shaped kitchen layout, whether open or closed.

The Five Kitchen Zones

Another way to think about the basics of kitchen design is an arrangement of five kitchen zones:

• The food storage area: Also known as the pantry, this section is where you store your dry or canned goods.
• The dish storage area: Store your dishes, cutlery, etc., in these cabinets.
• The preparation area: You will need at least one countertop large enough for food and drink preparation.
• The cooking area: The cooking area pertains mainly to the range. The stove, oven, and microwave oven will usually be together.
• The cleaning area: The kitchen sink is both helpful for preparing meals and cleaning up. The dishwasher will be close to the sink.

Customizations

Customizations to the kitchen include the type of appliances you have, the kitchen materials, and custom storage or design styles. For example, you might choose to have an appliance garage, toe-kick drawers, or a pot filler, just to name a few of the options.
