7 Spring Cleaning Safety Tips

Ready for spring cleaning? Don’t forget these safety tips.

Maryland has different phases of spring. Whether it’s “fool’s spring” or real spring, spring cleaning time comes eventually. New and older homes alike benefit from deep cleaning at least once a year. Whether you live in a new construction home or not, there are at least seven spring cleaning safety tips you should follow for the smoothest and most successful experience.

1. Take Breaks; Prioritize Your Health

Don’t rush and don’t sacrifice your health to clean your home in record time. Take breaks when you need to. Create a house cleaning party to lighten the load for yourself, if you would like. You should also stay hydrated and eat well; letting these things go for rigorous house cleaning is not worth it.

2. Declutter

Clean up what is already there. Organize clothing, deal with paperwork, and declutter as much as possible. Decluttering your home can make you feel so much better, especially if you have things you know you need to throw out or give away already.

3. Ventilate

Ventilate your home while you are cleaning. If it is a nice day outside, which it should be if it is spring, then you can open the windows to allow a cross-breeze to flow through your home throughout the day. Ventilation will maintain good air quality while you are removing dirt and using cleaning supplies.

4. Wear PPE If Applicable

If the cleaning tools or the contaminants you are removing are hazardous in any way, it is best to wear protective items to shield your skin, lungs, etc. from injury. For example, you could wear close-toed shoes, a face mask against airborne dust and chemicals, and gloves for cleaning.

5. Use the Right Cleaning Supplies

Do not use the wrong cleaning tools for the wrong surfaces, and do not mix chemicals. You don’t want erosion or an explosion in your house. If you need to, research what the best solutions are for each cleaning task.

6. Lift with Your Legs

If you are lifting heavy items, do not strain and injure yourself. Remember to lift with your legs while keeping your back straight. Do not overexert yourself.

7. Practice Caution with Ladders

If you use a ladder to reach ceiling fans, skylights, vents, etc., ensure the ladder is steady, wear non-slip shoes, and have a spotter for you if you can.
