Is your home ready for future storms? Here’s how you can be prepared.

Some years have larger storms than others. While hurricane season can come with strong winds and heavy rains, you do not have to worry. Being prepared is the responsible thing to do and will set you up for a safer time. Whether you have an existing home or are building a new construction home, there are different ways to stormproof your home.

Ways to Stormproof Your Home

Windows, Doors, and Garage Doors

Storm-grade windows, doors, and garage doors are necessary for the most resilient home construction. Impact-resistant windows will stay strong no matter the wind gusts or debris that might fly through the air. Hurricane window shutters and storm doors add extra layers of protection. Garage doors can benefit from garage door bracing kits, which fortify these vulnerable openings.

Secure Roofing

Strong, upward winds can tear roofs right off of houses. If you live in an area that has even a mild to moderate tornado or hurricane risk, your roof needs to be ready for the worst conditions. There must be no damage to the shingles, and the soffit, fascia, and flashing must all be watertight. For extra fortification, hurricane roof clips or straps can tie the roof rafters to the wall plates.

A Clean and Well-Maintained Yard

Ensure that your landscape has proper grading to avoid flooding around your home’s foundation, and keep the trees trimmed and free from dead branches to prevent damage to your home. Keep your yard free of loose objects during extremely windy weather.

Utilities

Know where your utility shutoffs are, such as the water main valve, the electricity switch, and the natural gas switch. Should anything happen, you may need to shut these supplies to your home to avoid a power overload, gas leak, flooding, etc.

Emergency Kit

Have an emergency kit ready, should your power go out and bad weather keep you at home. Keep a kit of medical supplies, food, water, flashlights, cleaning and sanitary supplies ready at all times should foul weather strike. Have a way to cook food and gather potable water before major storms hit.

Begin with a Solid Foundation

If you are building new, be confident that you are working with a reliable home builder. A firm foundation and excellent structural integrity will set you up for weathering storms well.
