Master Bedroom Location: First or Second Floor?

May 14, 2025
Primary Bedroom (Medium)

Upstairs or downstairs? You have options with the master suite placement.

The master bedroom is one of the most important rooms in any house. After all, it is where the primary homeowners will want to sleep. Given that people generally spend a third of every day sleeping, it’s worth creating a room where you will feel relaxed. With today’s floor plans, you have the option of placing the master bedroom on the first or second floor. What master bedroom location would you choose?

Master Bedroom on the First Floor

A master bedroom on the first floor offers easy access to all, whether you are able-bodied or have physical difficulties. If you intend this house to be your forever home, then a first-floor master suite will still be easily accessible even if you cannot climb the stairs. Additionally, you will have easy access to the main living areas every day. The kitchen, living room, etc., are all only a dozen or so steps away.

A first-floor master bedroom is also private. It gives parents some distance from older children and guests. Even on the first floor, it is completely separate from other living spaces, especially since it usually contains a master bath as well.

Master Bedroom on the Second Floor

What benefits are there to second-story master bedrooms? On the second floor, you also have a sense of security and privacy. The master suite is still separate from the other bedrooms. Plus, it is more separate from the main living rooms and the front door, which can offer a greater feeling of sanctuary and security.

If you have young children or want to start a family, then a second-story master bedroom will provide closer proximity to your children, which is helpful in the case of emergencies. Keeping all bedrooms on one floor offers some elements of greater security for sure!

Which Master Bedroom Placement Is Better?

Some people have stronger preferences than others. At the end of the day, it might be a matter of preference after all. You can always include at least one bedroom and full bath downstairs and one upstairs. With that flexibility, you can have options.
