2nd Floor Bathroom Placement: Considerations

One of the variations you might see in these models and their variations, such as the Coolidge model, is the 2nd floor bathroom placement. Here are some considerations when choosing the best spot for your upstairs bathroom.

Considerations for Your 2nd Floor Bathroom’s Location

Proximity to Additional Plumbing

The easiest spot to place an upstairs bathroom is close to additional upstairs plumbing. If you also have an upstairs master suite, then it’s most convenient to place the master bathroom and secondary upstairs bathroom next to each other. 

Otherwise, consider placing the 2nd floor bathroom above the kitchen or laundry room where other major plumbing lines are. The simpler the build, the less costly and time-consuming the construction is.

Accessibility

Another consideration is accessibility. The 2nd floor bathroom should be close to secondary bedrooms. The fewer feet a person must travel from their bedroom to their bathroom, the better. At the same time, you do not necessarily need to cut a few steps to the bathroom in order to live comfortably.

Effect on the Layout

Where you place one room will affect the layout, size, and dimensions of other spaces on the same floor. For example, if you place the bathroom outside the bedrooms, it will decrease the size of the upstairs hallway. If you create a Jack-and-Jill bathroom, it could eat into the square footage of the secondary bedrooms.

Ventilation

Bathroom ventilation is part of the design. You should not have a bathroom that does not have a way to vent steam and hot air out of your home; a window is helpful, but not enough.
