5 Mudroom Ideas for New Homes

Planning a new home design? Consider these entryway ideas.

Every season comes with different kinds of weather that could end up dirtying your home. Pollen, mud, dust, and mold spores can all enter your home merely through you and your family walking through the front door every day. Having a designated mudroom area, no matter how small or simple, can make your life easier and keep your home cleaner. Check out these five mudroom ideas for new homes you might incorporate into yours.

1. Wall Closet or Cabinet Beside the Main Entrance

If your front door opens directly into the living room, you could add fixtures in the entrance area to create the sense of a mudroom space. For example, you could have a built-in wall closet for coats and shoes, or a sturdy cabinet that does the same. A light fixture above the entrance area sets this space apart even more.

2. A Half Wall or Arch Wall

A permanent divider wall can also give the effect of separate zones without compromising the openness of the space. Classic dividing walls come in the forms of half walls, partial walls, arch walls, and half walls with windows into the neighboring room. The extra wall space can be very useful for creating an entryway.

3. An Adjacent Half Bath or Full Bath

In good home designs, you will usually find a half bath, also called a powder room, close to the front door. There may also be a bathroom close to your usual entrance near the garage. A powder room allows your family and guests to freshen up easily. A bathroom with a shower, handheld or otherwise, can be especially useful if you have pets or engage in a lot of outdoor activities.

4. Built-In Storage and Seating

Whether your mudroom is a fully enclosed hallway or open to the living room, built-in storage and benches can make a world of difference for storing shoes, keys, coats, and more. Built-in furnishings offer a craftsman-style, elevated feeling to any home when done well.

5. A Full Hallway

A full, separate hallway with doors into the nearest rooms creates the most formal entryway and enough space to include seating, storage, and anything else you may need. Hard flooring, such as tile, LVP, and hardwood, is a great option for this high-traffic area.
