Fitting Your Home to Your Lifestyle

It’s your home, so it should fit your lifestyle. Find your ideal home design with these tips.

Your new home should be able to accommodate how you want to enjoy your home. It wouldn’t do if you wanted to have an eat-in kitchen, but have no room to eat in your kitchen. It’s worth thinking about how you want to live your home life when designing a new construction home. Here, we’ll discuss some fundamentals for fitting your home to your lifestyle to give you a great head start and a fantastic home.

Think Long-Term

It’s best to think long-term. Do you plan to get married and have children? Do you expect to care for your aging parents down the road? Do you expect your family to play outdoor sports together, or do you want to operate a basement business? Whether you want to do any of the above or more, consider how your home can be large enough and functional enough to fulfill those uses.

Think General to Specific

Start simple with the basics before going into what color you’d like the kitchen cabinets to be. Think about the following things:

  • How many bedrooms and baths you’ll need
  • Open or closed floor plan
  • Ground floor layout
  • Dining room or no dining room
  • Attached or detached garage
  • Number of bonus rooms to meet your needs (home office, sunroom, rec room, etc.)

Plan Spaces for Your Favorite Activities

Consider how you like to spend your time at home and what you’ll need. If you work from home, a dedicated, quiet workspace is a must-have. If you love sports, make room for enough space to play your favorite games. If you love reading, you can have a library. This part of designing a home is quite enjoyable.

Maximize Storage Space

One can never have enough storage space. Maximize storage space in your kitchen, bathrooms, entryways, and utility rooms so that even with less furniture, you’ll have what you need to store coats, clothes, food, cleaning tools, and more.

Choose Low-Maintenance Finishing Touches

Lastly, choose low-maintenance finishes like flooring, wall paint, countertops, and light fixtures. You’ll want to plan out how you will clean it all; if it requires extensive elbow grease and you are very busy, it might not be best for your house. At the Ameri-Star Homes Design Center, you can see the options for yourself.
